What is Thoracic or Pulmonary Surgery?

With the name of Thoracic Surgery are called all the interventions that are performed inside the thorax with the exception of heart and large vessels. Within our specialty we count on the experience for the surgical management of the pulmonary diseases and of the thoracic wall, Clinica Cardiovascular counts on trained professionals and with ample experience in the management of these pathologies.

Thoracic surgery was formerly an independent specialty, but the reduction in the number of cases of pulmonary tuberculosis caused a decrease in the volume of work and that is why it was assigned to cardiovascular surgery, since these surgeons are better trained to solve complications that arise in these surgeries.

We can group thoracic surgery operations into several compartments:

PULMONARY SURGERY

1. Lobectomies (1 lobe only)
2. Bilobectomies (2 lobes)
3. Pneumonectomies (whole lung)
4. Pulmonary biopsies
5. Bulectomies (resection of lung bullae or air blisters)
6. Resection of segments of Trachea or bronchus

MEDIASTINUM SURGERY

1. Endothoracic goiter
2. Thymus resection
3. Resection of metastatic lymph nodes and/or tumors.
4. Resection of neuronal ganglia
5. Diaphragmatic hernia
6. Pre-scalene biopsies

COSTAL WALL SURGERY:

1. Simple costal resections
2. Multiple costal resections (thoracoplasties)
3. Resection of cervical rib and first rib

PLEURAL SURGERY:

1. Drainage of simple or traumatic pleural effusions
2. Drainage of purulent effusions (empyema)
3. Pleural-parietal decortications
4. Tumor resection (Mesothelioma)

These operations can be performed in a traditional way (open), but can often be done by Video-Thoracoscopy (VATS), avoiding the patient much of the physical discomfort and shortening the period of hospitalization.

In all the hospitals to which we are associated, there are the necessary instruments and support staff for these operations, either open or through thoracoscopy (VATS),  in Clínica Cardiovascular we are to guide you and offer you the best and most suitable therapy.
